Zenevloed picks: 10 outstanding releases of August

For the first edition of the monthly Zenevloed picks we chose ten outstanding releases, which have seen the light in the month of August. We have decided to compile this monthly list, because of the sheer amount of underground releases that simply deserve a mention due to their beautiful quality, cutting-edge sound, and inspiring artwork. This list is in no particular order! As always we will also provide links to where you can buy these gems and support the artists/collectives.

01. Cremation Lily – In England Now, Underwater [Alter]

Long awaited release from Cremation Lily and it certainly does not disappoint. In England Now, Underwater is an introspective diary in audible form, laying bare intimate thoughts against the backdrop of the English coastal landscape. Inventive use of loops, vocals, and field recording.

Physical is sold out, but buy download via: https://cremationlily-alter.bandcamp.com/album/in-england-now-underwater

02. EeOo – Owning The Past [Self-Released]

Part of the Lakker duo Eomac has released a compilation of older tracks on the new digital album Owning The Past. A fearless endeavor into sounds from the distant past proves to give a glimpse into a still relevant near future. Proto-dubstep, left-field techno, and a pinch of nostalgia.

05. Anasisana – Caught Between Worlds Colliding [Vaknar]

The young producer Anasisana has in the mean time become a master of transmitting emotions into his musical output. A compelling last witness of an important chapter in his life.

06. L/F/D/M – Lurid Attractions [Label In Disarray]

Highly enticing assemblage of lo-fi electronics, big acid melodies, drained in an Industrial attitude. Sporting one of the nicest artwork/print of this month, this tape is both a feast for the eye and the ear.

07. Black Merlin – Noi [She Lost Kontrol]

Black Merlin has only recently caught the eye of the Amsterdam public, yet sports an extensive discography of cuts. The last release on SLK features aggressive looping synth lines, distinct beats, and an icy will to destroy the dance floor.

08. V/A – Ghosts of Tomorrow [Last Europa Kiss]

Big compilation with scene defining artists DJ Loser, Penelope’s Fiance, DJ Warzone, ++++. L.E.K is another Italian label that shows how it can be done. With a distinct crunchy, lo-fi, synth-laden EBM feeling, related to labels like Pinkman and License to Love.

09. Esker – Destruction Time Again [Voitax]

As the newest addition to the Voitax label roster, Esker lives up to the expectations with an outstanding release. Title of the 12″ and the cover art are somewhat contradictory, but the tracks do show that powerful quality derived from the interplay between drums and noise.

10. Talbert Anthony / raven [Tandem Tapes]

Stunning slow-paced split by Talbert Anthony and raven on the Indonesian Tandem Tapes. Special attention goes to none of these things, absolutely amazing piano composition.
